When I was a kid, and before safety regulations had outlawed them, you got proper build-them-yourself toys inside Kinder Surprise Eggs. Some of the toys had a definite science fiction aspect to them, and my favourites were the little robots that you could put together yourself. I liked to imagine what kind of story those robot characters could have, and came up with something similar to Marvel's Shogun Warriors comics.
